Book NowWhat Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic form of massage therapy designed to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid throughout the body.
Unlike traditional deep tissue massage, MLD uses light, precise movements that follow the direction of lymphatic pathways. Treatments are calming, non-invasive, and designed to support healthy lymphatic flow, circulation, and the body’s natural recovery processes. Many patients also report feeling lighter, less congested, and more relaxed following treatment.
MLD may also be beneficial prior to surgery. In some cases, treatment performed one day before a procedure may help stimulate lymphatic flow, clear excess fluid and cellular waste, and support post-operative healing and recovery.
MLD may help:
- Reduce swelling and fluid retention
- Support post-surgical recovery
- Improve lymphatic circulation
- Help manage inflammation and tissue congestion
- May help reduce allergy-related nasal and facial congestion, including swelling that can affect breathing and sinus drainage
- Promote relaxation and nervous system regulation
- Support mobility and tissue health
- Reduce feelings of heaviness or tightness
- Help manage scar tissue and fascial restriction
- Support digestive function and help relieve constipation by promoting parasympathetic nervous system activity, while also helping calm the nervous system during periods of heightened stress or anxiety
What Is Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT)?
Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is considered the gold-standard conservative treatment approach for managing lymphedema and chronic swelling conditions. Treatment plans are individualized based on each patient’s symptoms, medical history, and goals.
CDT combines several therapeutic approaches, including:
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
- Compression therapy education
- Movement and exercise guidance
- Skin care support
- Swelling management strategies
- Self-care and home care education
Who Can Benefit From Treatment?
Lymphatic drainage and lymphedema therapy may support individuals experiencing:
- Post-surgical swelling and recovery (including cosmetic, orthopedic, breast surgery, and C-section recovery)
- Lymphedema (including arm or leg swelling, heaviness, or fluid retention)
- Cancer-related swelling, including post-mastectomy care, lymph node removal, and radiation-related tissue changes
- May also be beneficial in acute injuries such as sprains, hematomas, and significant bruising (typically after the first 48 hours once clotting has occurred), as MLD can be performed away from the affected area to help redirect fluid and reduce swelling
- Chronic swelling, inflammation, or circulatory congestion
- Chronic venous insufficiency, including varicose veins and related swelling or heaviness
- General fluid retention, puffiness, or feelings of heaviness
MLD may not be appropriate for individuals with uncontrolled congestive heart failure or other conditions where fluid management is medically unstable. Caution is advised in cases of significant kidney disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or uncontrolled diabetes, and treatment should be adapted based on medical stability and physician guidance. In palliative care settings, MLD may be used to support comfort and symptom relief when appropriate, in coordination with the patient’s healthcare team. Medical clearance is recommended when there are complex or significant medical conditions
